Dongola: A Novel of Nubia by Idris Ali,

Dongola: A Novel of Nubia by Idris Ali,
In this, the first Nubian novel ever translated, Awad al-Shalali, a Nubian i worker in modern Egypt, dreams of Dongola -- the capital of medieval Nubia, a culture lost to the flood waters of the Aswan High Dam. In Dongola, the Nubians of old reached a zenith. They defeated and dominated Upper Egypt, and their archers, deadly accurate in battle, were renowned as the "bowmen of the glance." Halima, Awad's wife, deals with the reality of today's Nubia, a poverty-stricken bottomland. Men like Awad have been modernized and now work in Cairo for good wages while the women remain at home in squalor, dominated by the Islam of their conquerors, and ignorant of the glory now covered by the Nile and its reservoirs. Left to tend Awad's sick mother and dying country, Halima grows despondent and learns the truths behind the Upper Egyptian lyric: "Time you are a traitor -- what have you done with my love?" Through his characters' pain and suffering, with wit and a keen sense of history's absurdities, Idris Ali paints in vibrant detail the story of cultures and hearts divided, of lost lands, impossible dreams, and abandoned loves.

Summit Avenue by Mary Sharratt,
Summit Avenue by Mary Sharratt,
From the woods of old world Germany to the woods of northern Minnesota, Kathrin's journey is one of discovery. As the poet Mandy Sivers says, Summit Avenue is "a book about Woman ... and the tremendous, multiplied hurdles and barriers which women had to overcome as immigrants. This turbulent tale, while apparently telling of a lesbian relationship, is talking even more about the flight back into the mythic depths of womanhood -- the old, pre-Christian, woman-centered community". Kathrin immigrates to the U.S. in 1911 and begins work at a mill sewing flour bags. To escape the long dismal hours and a future that seems horribly bleak, she turns to imagination and fairy tales. Via the owners of a small bookstore, Kathrin meets Violet Waverly, a beautiful widow. Violet offers Kathrin a job translating a book of fairy tales, inviting her to live in her mansion on Summit Avenue, the richest and most elite neighborhood in Saint Paul. Both women, left wounded and alone in different circumstances, find increasing solace in each other. Although Violet can offer Kathrin love, compassion, and a glimpse of the dizzying heights of wealthy upper-class grandeur, she cannot fully disguise the painful secrets hiding behind the glitter. As Kathrin comes closer to the heart of Violet's mysterious past, she discovers that life, like a fairy tale, is often based on illusion.
